There’s something rather fitting about spending Halloween inside a Victorian mansion filled with extraordinary paintings, sculptures and curiosities. On Friday 30 October 2026, the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth is opening its doors after dark for an evening inspired by Gothic literature, mysterious objects and the stranger side of Victorian culture.
Victorian Gothic at Russell-Cotes promises a very different museum visit, with atmospheric music, dramatic readings and activities taking place throughout the historic house.

What to Expect at Victorian Gothic at Russell-Cotes
From 6pm until 8.30pm, visitors can explore the museum while enjoying a programme of Gothic-themed activities.
There will be live piano music, candlelit readings from literary classics and short talks exploring famous stories including Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
The evening also includes opportunities to handle unusual objects from the museum collection, a Gothic writing activity and mini book-club discussions. Optional tarot and palm readings are available for an additional charge.
Victorian Gothic clothing and dark elegance are encouraged, although dressing up isn’t compulsory.
It’s an unusual opportunity to enjoy the Russell-Cotes at night, when the elaborate interiors and extraordinary collections should feel particularly atmospheric.
